What is Orangutan English.com?
Orangutan English's main purpose is to help language teachers find language students in Japan. Teachers enter their details and these are stored on our database. These profiles are then viewed by students and if a student sees a profile from a teacher they feel, they would like to be taught by, the student then contacts the teacher. The site is only for teachers genuine about teaching and students genuine about learning. Although we do not tell you how to teach, we do expect that you take your teaching seriously. Teachers can choose their own rates and teach as they please. We ask that teachers who receive students through this website deal with those students in a professional manner.
Who should use Orangutan English.com?
People genuine and serious about teaching and learning in Japan. You must currently be living in Japan and available to teach in order to sign up, and we ask that you intend to stay in Japan for a period of at least 3 months. You are required to be completely fluent in the language you are teaching. If the profile you enter has mistakes, which suggest you may not meet this requirement, your profile will be removed. We advise you advertise to teach your native language.
What qualifications are needed to teach?
As a minimum, you are required to be able to speak to a native level. You are also required to have a legal working permit. Any profiles we receive which suggest (through grammatical and spelling errors) your own English ability is not at a level good enough to teach, will not be added to our database.
Where do I teach?
You can decide this together with your student. If you have access to a classroom or a free space in a library or community centre this would be ideal. Other common places are a coffee shop, an office or the student's home.
How do students get my contact Information?
Students can browse the teacher profiles for free. However, these profiles do not display your contact details (email and phone number). Once the student pays a membership fee, the student can access a members section of the website. In this section, profiles are listed with the contact details displayed. Your profile is viewed by potential students at www.orangutanjapan.com
How can I remove my profile?
You can remove or edit your profile at any time. Just click the 'edit profile' button from the home page and follow the instructions.
I'm not getting any students. What's wrong?
There are a number of teacher student introduction websites like this one, and adding your profile to all of them will increase your chances of finding private students. Other ways you can improve your chances of being contacted are as follows:
Ensure your profile is clearly and accurately filled out. If you can write in Japanese, show this in your profile.
Add a clear recent photograph. Profiles with photos are always pushed to the top of the list.
Don't overcharge if you don't have the skills or qualifications to back up your price. 2500 yen per hour is about average, but this does vary quite considerably between teachers.
You can also add a short video introduction. If you send us a short video introduction we will add it to your profile. This gives students a better 'feel' as to what kind of teacher you may be like, and gives them the chance to hear your accent. You can send it to us, or upload via the website.
